Filmmakers Brave Winter Rooftop Stay to Fund Solar Panels

An innovative approach to addressing the energy crisis has emerged from an unlikely place: the rooftop of a couple of filmmakers. In their latest venture, Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn have taken a unique step to highlight the potential of solar panels for their neighborhood, transforming their experience into the documentary “Power Station.” This film, capturing their winter rooftop campaign, showcases a creative solution to climate change and community empowerment.

Laughter Amidst the Cold

Those attending the 29th Ji.hlava documentary festival in the Czech Republic were surprised by the uplifting spirit of “Power Station.” Known for tackling pressing issues, Powell and Edelstyn blend humor and spectacle in their films, offering a refreshing take on serious subjects. Their previous projects—like reviving a Soviet-era distillery in Ukraine or erasing predatory loans in the U.K.—demonstrate their knack for turning documentaries into entertaining capers. With “Power Station,” they address the U.K.’s energy crisis by camping on their rooftop to advocate for solar panels in their community.

A Quest for Green Energy

The filmmakers’ project centers on Lynmouth Road in Walthamstow, London, where they witness first-hand the struggles faced by 39% of the U.K. population trying to keep their homes warm. Huddled in blankets and armed with mugs of tea, Powell and Edelstyn are on a mission: to launch a grassroots green energy movement. Highlighting government inaction, Edelstyn argues, “The government should be giving everyone solar panels.” Their winter rooftop vigil, despite the biting cold, underscores their commitment to making a tangible difference in their community.

Community Engagement and Challenges

Powell and Edelstyn’s journey involves meeting with energy experts and assessing the energy poverty affecting 27% of Walthamstow Forest residents. Despite their playful banter, they demonstrate incredible determination to promote a shared energy solution. Their methodical approach includes detailed planning and community engagement, eventually securing an energy company sponsor to help provide the much-needed solar panels.

Empowering Change Through Storytelling

“Power Station” not only captures the couple’s journey but also showcases the power of community-driven change. By connecting with neighbors, they highlight the diverse stories of resilience and solidarity. As Powell articulates, “We are trying… to show, actually we can have the power to make change.” The film, a Dartmouth Films production, is making waves in U.K. cinemas and serves as a blueprint for community empowerment. Collaborating with the Optimistic Foundation, the filmmakers are now helping schools adopt solar solutions as part of their ongoing mission to promote sustainable energy.
