In a significant step towards nurturing new cinematic talent, Excel Entertainment, co-founded by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the launch of “Excel Origins.” This initiative aims to discover, develop, and support the next generation of Indian filmmakers under the age of 30, embodying the company’s long-standing commitment to fresh voices and original storytelling.
Reflecting on a Legacy of Innovation
When Sidhwani and Akhtar established Excel Entertainment at the age of 26, they embarked on a journey that began with the revolutionary film “Dil Chahta Hai.” This project not only marked the start of their careers but also set a standard in Indian cinema for creative risk-taking and the promotion of original content. As they reminisce about their early days, the founders expressed, “25 years ago, we started Excel Entertainment and began work on a film called ‘Dil Chahta Hai.’ We had a simple belief – New voices and a different way of telling stories, will find an audience. We were 26 years old. We didn’t have all the answers, but we had an idea we believed in, the courage to take risks, and the tenacity to make it happen.”
Investing in Future Filmmakers
The launch of Excel Origins is framed as an extension of the founding philosophy that inspired Sidhwani and Akhtar. They emphasize the importance of empowering young filmmakers, stating, “As we look back at everything this journey has given us, we also find ourselves thinking about what the next 25 years has in store for us. We believe it will include Excel empowering young, aspiring filmmakers with bold ideas and the courage to tell stories differently.” This initiative represents a forward-looking vision that recognizes the necessity for innovation in cinema.
Defining the Initiative’s Focus
Under the Excel Origins banner, the company plans to seek emerging directors and writers, providing them with the support they need to pursue original content rather than relying on established formulas. The initiative will cover a broad spectrum of genres and storytelling styles, also creating casting opportunities for actors and talented individuals at the start of their careers.
A Long-term Vision for Fresh Talent
Sidhwani and Akhtar view this endeavor as much more than a one-time project. They are committed to cultivating a consistent supply of new directing, writing, and acting talent, alongside original intellectual property. This approach aims to distinguish Excel’s output in the coming years, especially in an industry that increasingly leans towards proven names and formulas.
A Remarkable Filmography
Since “Dil Chahta Hai,” Excel Entertainment has amassed an impressive filmography that includes iconic titles such as “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” the “Don” and “Fukrey” franchises, “Raees,” “Dil Dhadakne Do,” and “Gully Boy.” The company has also ventured into original series production, notably creating “Inside Edge,” India’s first original series for Prime Video, followed by hits like “Mirzapur,” “Made in Heaven,” “Dahaad,” and “Bambai Meri Jaan.”
With Excel Origins, Sidhwani and Akhtar aim to forge the future of Indian cinema while honoring the legacy that has defined their journey over the past 25 years.
