Erik Poppe Discusses Jon Fosse's Profound 'Beloved' Film

In the enchanting realm of cinema, “Beloved” shines brightly as it opens the Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund. Directed by Erik Poppe, this cinematic adaptation brings to life a script penned by Nobel Prize winner Jon Fosse, whose recent accolade has sparked renewed interest in his work.

From Script to Screen

Poppe reflects on the project’s long gestation period, revealing, “It’s a project that has been on my desk for many, many years. Jon Fosse wrote it almost 20 years ago. After he received the Nobel Prize in Literature [in 2023], it felt like the whole world wanted to read it. But I always knew it was a powerful piece of work.”

A Poignant Story

“Beloved” explores the intimate lives of a couple, Asle and Gerd, who meet in a quaint coastal town. Their story intensifies as Asle is drawn back to the sea while Gerd opts to remain in the village, creating a poignant narrative of separation and longing.

Star-Studded Cast and Production

The film features performances by Leo Magnus de la Nuez and Kristi-Helene Giæver Engeberg. Produced by Paradox and SF Production and sold by Reinvent Yellow Sales, it marks a notable contribution to contemporary Norwegian cinema.

Poppe’s Artistic Vision

Known for his larger productions such as “The King’s Choice” and “Utøya: July 22,” Poppe intentionally chose a more intimate story this time. He shares, “Looking at the world as it is right now, I needed to hold onto some sense of hope – or at least something more human. I wanted to explore the relationship between two people, as well as between a father and son, because it’s a story of daily life I can relate to.”

A Search for Authenticity

Poppe emphasizes the importance of genuine storytelling, stating, “We’ve all seen how well they perform in the cinemas, surprisingly enough. People long for something honest and truthful that they can just dive into.” The enduring appeal of Fosse’s work further enhances this authenticity.

Fosse’s Influence and Legacy

As Fosse continues to gain recognition, Poppe notes, “He’s about to be named one of the most important living authors in the world today, and this isn’t based on his novels or plays. [The screenplay] is an original piece of work that he wrote with only one goal in mind: to make it into a movie.” He anticipates more adaptations of Fosse’s work, appreciating the depth and simplicity that draws audiences into his narratives.

Developing Relationships on Screen

Despite the film’s narrow focus on two characters and their child, Poppe maintains his rigorous approach to actor preparation. “On all my movies, I insist on having at least eight or 12 weeks with them [prior to the shoot]. If I can establish a truthful, honest relationship with my actors, I can push them quite far,” he explains.

The Landscape as a Character

Poppe also dedicated significant effort to selecting a filming location, elaborating, “I spent a lot of time figuring out where to shoot this film. It’s almost like a mythical landscape, a mythical part of Norway. It’s the fourth character in the film.” The misty, melancholic setting mirrors the couple’s insecurities and growing distance.

A Complex Exploration of Love

The film delves into the complexities of communication within relationships. Poppe reflects on his own family background, revealing, “I was raised by two parents who were almost exactly like these two.” He highlights the disappearing language once shared between the couple, noting, “The film is about where they are and what they’re longing for.”

A Darker Undertone

Despite its title, “Beloved” harbors a deeper, more complex narrative. Poppe acknowledges audience reactions, stating, “Based on our first screenings, people have been surprised, but they also really love that it’s not your regular love story.” He appreciates Fosse’s unconventional storytelling, admitting, “I think it’s a brave piece of work by Jon. I was tempted by the fact that he doesn’t follow the paths we are so used to. I wanted to explore how that could work in a movie.”

With “Beloved,” Erik Poppe invites audiences into a reflective exploration of love, loss, and the quest for connection, all woven within the ethereal beauty of Norway.
