In the heart of the English countryside, nestled among the rolling hills of the West Midlands, one of Harry Styles‘ key collaborators has discovered a new rhythm in life. Mitch Rowland, known for his significant role as Styles’ guitarist, has traded the bustling music scenes of Los Angeles for the serene landscape of rural England. Here, with the help of his family, he’s crafted “Whistling Pie,” a folk-rock masterpiece that echoes his evolving life’s journey. With influences from legendary British folk guitarist Bert Jansch, Rowland’s album beautifully combines the rustic charm of the countryside with introspective ballads.
From Midwest to Midlands
Mitch Rowland’s journey began in the unassuming surroundings of a Midwest pizzeria, where he worked before fate introduced him to global pop icon Harry Styles. Life took a dramatic turn, catapulting him from washing dishes to playing guitar alongside one of the world’s most successful musicians. Yet the leap from Ohio to international stages didn’t change Rowland’s core. Finding solace in the tranquility of the Cotswolds, he’s embraced a lifestyle that’s more about family and authenticity than glamour. He acknowledges, “It’s a luxury for me to be a songwriter out in that part of the green world.”
Crafting “Whistling Pie” with Family
“Whistling Pie” is a triumph of collaboration, created alongside Rowland’s wife and drummer, Sarah Jones. The album is infused with personal reflections, with demo sessions often held at Sarah’s family farm. Intriguingly, some of these demos began in a converted chicken shed, a testament to the project’s organic nature. “We’re right down the lane from her parents,” Rowland explains. “He and I would go into the studio he built in the chicken shed.” This setting allowed Rowland to weave together the authenticity of family ties with his evolving artistic narrative.
A Folk-Rock Haven
The West Midlands have become a creative haven for Rowland. While the region is noted more for its greenery than a bustling music scene, its pastoral beauty serves as the perfect muse. Rowland’s inspiration drew from the locale’s music heritage, surprising to some, with legends like Mott the Hoople hailing from the area. “I suppose I have to mention Ellie Goulding is from there. But let’s stick with Mott the Hoople,” Rowland jokes, revealing both pride and wit in his adopted home.
An Evolving Musical Journey
Rowland’s relocation hasn’t only impacted his music but also his family life. Touring with Styles, Rowland was able to bring his growing family along for the experience, a decision influenced by mentoring from Ben Harper, a fellow musician and friend. “Harry made it possible for us to tour as a family,” Rowland notes, highlighting the unique lifestyle they lead. This blend of family and music life fosters an environment ripe for creative exploration and personal growth.
The timeless appeal of folk and rock remains a cornerstone in Rowland’s artistic identity. Whether performing on grand stages or strumming a guitar in the solitude of the English countryside, he draws inspiration from that singular vision of simplicity and connection. As Rowland continues to blend these worlds, he’s sure to inspire others with his enchanting folk-rock creations.
