LACHSAPalooza Celebrates 40 Years of L.A.’s Star-Making Arts Program: “This School Is Special”
The iconic Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) is marking its 40th anniversary with LACHSAPalooza, a grand celebration to honor its legacy and influence in arts education. This renowned institution has been a launchpad for artists like Josh Groban and Phoebe Bridgers. The event, featuring performances at the Greek Theatre, aims to raise $2.5 million to support the future of this exceptional program amidst challenges in public arts education.
LACHSAPalooza: A Celebration of Artistic Excellence
The highly anticipated event, LACHSAPalooza, is scheduled for May 30 and promises an exciting lineup, including performances by Ozomatli and Fitz and the Tantrums, with Anthony Anderson as the emcee. Anderson, a proud alumnus from the class of 1985, reflects, “This school is special,” highlighting how LACHSA was integral to his artistic journey.
Empowering Young Artists
Throughout its history, LACHSA has stood out as a premier arts school, comparable to New York’s LaGuardia High. Offering programs in dance, cinematic arts, music, theater, and visual arts, the school benefits from its location in the heart of Hollywood, attracting young talent from around the world. Taran Killam, a former student and Saturday Night Live alum, attributes his early comedy training to LACHSA. “That type of training and exposure demystifies the idea of doing this as a career,” Killam shares.
Creating a Supportive Community
Alumni consistently acknowledge the school’s supportive environment and dedicated staff. Zoey Deutch recalls, “It wasn’t just a school, it was a space where being an artist is taken seriously.” LACHSA’s ability to create a nurturing community plays a pivotal role in its success, allowing students to thrive and explore their artistic passions alongside like-minded peers.
The Financial Landscape and Future Challenges
LACHSA operates with half of its funding from state resources, relying heavily on donations for the remainder. Trena Pitchford, executive director of the LACHSA Foundation, stresses the importance of community support, especially in light of recent challenges such as the pandemic and wildfires. “Public education today, the struggles are real,” she notes, emphasizing the need for continued philanthropy.
The Legacy and Importance of Arts Education
Looking ahead, LACHSA aims to continue its mission of fostering artistic talent. Anthony Anderson underscores the broader societal value of arts education, stating, “Schools like LACHSA are important not only to young artists, but to our society.” As the school celebrates its 40th year, LACHSA remains a crucial pillar in championing the arts as an essential facet of education and culture.
