Campbell X Directs 'Low Rider' Debut at Edinburgh Festival

Alief has taken a significant step in the film industry by acquiring world sales rights to Campbell X’s latest feature, Low Rider. This move precedes the film’s highly anticipated world premiere at the prestigious Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it is set to compete for the £50,000 Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence.

Plot and Cast

Low Rider stars Emma McDonald, known for her roles in Moonhaven and The Serpent Queen, alongside Thishiwe Ziqubu from Hard to Get. The narrative follows Quinn, a British woman driven by the impulse to connect with her estranged father in South Africa. Along her journey, she encounters the vibrant Harley, portrayed by Ziqubu, leading to a dynamic exploration through the Western Cape, filled with both emotional and physical challenges.

Creative Processes and Inspirations

Alief president Brett Walker described Low Rider as a film defined by self-discovery and resilience. “Anchored by the seductive performance of charismatic lead Emma McDonald, we are thrilled to represent this film,” Walker stated. The sentiment was echoed by Alief partner Miguel Govea, who remarked on the film’s anticipated impact at Edinburgh.

The film, written by Stephen Strachan and directed by Campbell X, marks a return to narrative filmmaking for the director, who previously made waves with Stud Life. Produced by Rebecca Long and Stella Nwimo, the project boasts significant backing from BFI, Head Gear Films, and LipSync. The executive production team includes esteemed figures like the late Norman Merry and Peter Hampden.

Production Insights

Lead actress Emma McDonald expressed her excitement, sharing how the intense three-week shoot in South Africa was a whirlwind experience. “The cast and crew were incredibly talented and generous,” she said, highlighting the profound impact the project had on her appreciation for storytelling and filmmaking.

Shot across Cape Town and the Western Cape, the film embraces a rugged aesthetic. Campbell X aimed to provide audiences with an unfiltered experience, stating, “In Low Rider, my aim was to take the audience on a bumpy ride around the Western Cape… without a seatbelt.”

Thematic Exploration

Low Rider delves deep into themes like identity, belonging, and personal growth. Quinn’s story intersects with elements of nightlife, rural mysticism, and exploring complex personal histories. According to producers Long and Nwimo, the film mirrors its protagonist’s journey, reflecting on universal themes with a fresh perspective.

The film stands out as part of the International Competition at EIFF, featuring 10 world premieres. As it competes for the audience-voted Connery Prize, Low Rider promises to resonate with viewers seeking stories of empowerment and exploration.
