BFI Distribution has taken the U.K.-Ireland theatrical rights for Imran Perretta’s debut film “Ish,” an award-winning piece that has already made waves in the film festival circuit. First shown earlier this year at Venice’s Critics’ Week, “Ish” secured the prestigious Audience Award. The film’s compelling narrative and evocative storytelling have set high expectations for its upcoming release, promising a significant impact on audiences in its home region.
BFI’s Exciting Acquisition
The acquisition of “Ish” by BFI Distribution signals a strategic move to bring this powerful debut to theatergoers across the U.K. and Ireland. Recognized for its impact, producer Dhiraj Mahey received the breakthrough producer prize at the British Independent Film Awards, underscoring the film’s resonance within the industry.
The distributor plans to roll out the release next year. Global Constellation, handling worldwide sales, played a key role in negotiating the deal on behalf of the filmmakers, ensuring “Ish” reaches a broad audience.
A Tale of Friendship and Growth
“Ish” tells the story of 12-year-olds Ish and Maram, best friends navigating the complexities of growing up. Their bond is tested following a concerning police encounter, pushing them to confront their realities and the challenges of adolescence. The film’s exploration of young masculinity and racial profiling has been described by The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw as “a compassionate, poignant and poetic urban pastoral.”
Direct quotes from critics highlight the film’s immersive nature and emotional depth, making it a much-anticipated watch for audiences eager for poignant storytelling.
An Impressive Collaboration of Talent
The film is a testament to Imran Perretta’s multi-faceted talent, as he not only directed but also wrote and scored “Ish.” BFI Distribution’s head of acquisitions, Laura Dos Santos, praised the achievement, emphasizing the film’s ability to connect with its audience. Perretta’s collaboration with talents like cinematographer Jermaine Canute Edwards and co-writer Enda Walsh enriches the film’s artistic quality.
The film’s production team brings together a powerhouse of experience, with Bennett McGhee and Dhiraj Mahey at the helm, and partnership from Good Chaos and Home Team. Financed by BBC Film and the BFI, “Ish” also benefits from support by media financier Calculus Media and Out of Order, showcasing a robust backing for its release.
A Promising Transition from Art to Film
Imran Perretta’s transition from contemporary art to filmmaking is echoed by notable British directors like Clio Barnard and Steve McQueen. Known for his influential work in visual art, Perretta continues to expand his narrative reach with “Ish,” a testament to his storytelling prowess.
