In a recent development that has grabbed the attention of superhero enthusiasts, Andrew Garfield emphatically denied any involvement in the upcoming Marvel film, “Avengers: Doomsday.” The buzz around Garfield’s potential return as Spider-Man has been rife with speculation, especially after his memorable appearance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Despite this, Garfield has made it clear that fans should not expect to see him or Tobey Maguire reprise their roles in the next Avengers installment.
Setting the Record Straight
During a GQ video interview, Garfield was directly asked about the possibility of appearing in “Avengers: Doomsday.” His response was strong and clear: “No, unequivocally f***ing no.” This statement aimed to dispel any ongoing rumors about his involvement in the film. Nevertheless, given Garfield’s history of misleading the press about his participation in “No Way Home,” fans remain skeptical.
A History of Denials and Surprises
Back in 2021, Garfield firmly denied his involvement in “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” only to surprise fans by appearing in the film alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire. This collaboration turned out to be a blockbuster success, grossing $1.9 billion globally. Garfield’s previous experiences have led to a cautious approach from fans when it comes to his current statements.
Reflecting on His Spider-Man Journey
Garfield first donned the Spider-Man suit in 2012 with “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Despite the success of his debut, the sequel in 2014 did not perform as well, abruptly halting his journey as the iconic superhero. Garfield expressed to Esquire how he felt “left dangling” after the unexpected end of his Spider-Man role.
In light of his return in “No Way Home,” Garfield shared his initial doubts about teaming up with Maguire again, admitting, “I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years much to my chagrin.” The experience turned out to be overwhelmingly positive for Garfield, describing it as “the most joyful thing ever.”
Future Possibilities
Although Garfield currently dismisses rumors of appearing in “Avengers: Doomsday,” he hasn’t closed the door entirely on returning as Spider-Man under the right circumstances. He stated, “I would 100% come back [as Spider-Man] if it was the right thing… that’s unique and odd and exciting.” Garfield’s love for the character remains strong, but any future participation hinges on the concept aligning with his vision.
Meanwhile, Tom Holland is busy with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” sparking additional rumors of Garfield’s potential involvement. However, Garfield has already set expectations straight by stating earlier this year, “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”
