Excitement continues to build around “Avengers: Doomsday,” as Alan Cumming confirms he’s wrapped filming his role as Nightcrawler. The beloved actor, who last brought the teleporting mutant to life in 2002’s “X2,” is returning for this highly anticipated Marvel installment. As fans eagerly await the film’s release, Cumming shares insights into his experience reprising the iconic character, marking a fascinating blend of nostalgia and innovation.
Cumming’s Nightcrawler Transformation
Backstage at the Creative Arts Emmys, where Alan Cumming was celebrated with an Emmy for his work on “The Traitors,” he reflected on his journey back to the Marvel universe. When asked about his preparation for “Avengers: Doomsday,” Cumming revealed, “Well, I’ve already done it. I finished it.” This marks a complete return to the dynamic role, including extensive stunt work and physical training that surprised even the accomplished stunt team. “The stunt people couldn’t believe that I could get up, let alone jump around and do this boxing and training,” he joked.
A Fresh Approach
Cumming confessed to neglecting a rewatch of “X2” before stepping back into Nightcrawler’s shoes—a decision he found beneficial. “I think that was what really helped, because this is super intense, and is loads of stuff at once,” he explained. This fresh perspective allowed him to dive into the character with renewed energy, tackling the complex demands of the role while embracing the advancements in technology that eased the process.
The Evolution of Makeup and Technology
Reflecting on the transformation into the blue, tattooed mutant, Cumming noted significant improvements in makeup technology. “Actually, what’s great about it — it was four-and-a-half to five hours before, and now it’s 90 minutes,” he shared. The evolution of green screen, CGI, and face replacement technology not only streamlined the process but enhanced the depth of his portrayal. “The thing about green screen, CGI and face replacement is that it’s very detailed work. So I did feel that I got a chance to really portray the character again properly,” Cumming elaborated.
An Epic Reunion
Joining Cumming in “Avengers: Doomsday” are his former X-Men colleagues, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn. The film also welcomes returning MCU stalwarts such as Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, and Winston Duke, setting the stage for an epic crossover event.
Fans can look forward to experiencing the next chapter of Nightcrawler’s journey when “Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Its sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is set to follow on December 17, 2027.
