Trailblazing Trans Romance 'Lala & Poppy' Shines at Indian Film Fest

A groundbreaking film, “Lala & Poppy,” has taken the spotlight at the International Film Festival of India, showcasing a trans love story pivotal for Indian cinema. Directed by Kaizad Gustad, renowned for “Bombay Boys,” this film marks his return after a lengthy hiatus. It boldly explores transgender narratives by casting authentic trans actors, Suruj Rajkhowa and Veer Singh, in its lead roles. This piece aims to transcend conventional storytelling and provide a fresh perspective on love and identity.

Challenging Traditional Narratives

“Lala & Poppy” is a significant deviation from traditional Indian cinema, portraying a narrative that centers on the love between Lala, a trans woman, and Poppy, a trans man. Gustad’s inspiration for the film came after meeting Rajkhowa five years ago, which led him to conceive a story where gender roles were secondary. “What would happen if a man transitioning to become a woman meets a woman transitioning to become a man?” Gustad pondered, aiming to explore uncharted territory in film.

A Collaborative and Inclusive Effort

Producer Bobby Bedi, known for backing seminal films like “Bandit Queen” and “Fire,” highlights the film’s role in bridging the gap between legal acceptance and societal norms in India. He stresses that “Lala & Poppy” is designed to engage a broader audience, not just those within the LGBTQ community. The production’s commitment to inclusivity extended to its crew, which was notably queer-inclusive, creating a supportive environment for genuine representation.

Actors’ Unique Experiences

For lead actors Suruj Rajkhowa and Veer Singh, the film offered rare opportunities for authentic portrayals. Rajkhowa expressed gratitude for being considered despite not fitting classical female norms, while Singh found personal resonance in the film’s themes. “This story was really personal to me,” Singh noted, recognizing the significance of such representation on a big screen.

Future Aspirations and Broader Impact

The film’s journey included development at the international screenwriters lab Stories That Travel, aimed at ensuring global resonance. Bedi is dedicated to a theatrical release in India, advocating for viewers to experience “Lala & Poppy” in cinemas. Ongoing discussions with distributors highlight this commitment, encouraging audiences to engage with the narrative actively.

Despite global challenges in transgender rights, Gustad emphasizes universal themes. “At the end of the day, it’s more of a human story,” he explains. Both he and Bedi see “Lala & Poppy” as a chance to contribute to global conversations on gender and love, underscoring cinema’s power to challenge perceptions and inspire change.
