New York City buzzed with excitement as the 63rd annual New York Film Festival kicked off with the premiere of “After the Hunt,” showcasing Hollywood stars and compelling drama. Held at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the event featured an outstanding cast led by Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield, igniting the festival’s opening night with their powerful performances.
The Glamorous Arrival
Luca Guadagnino, dressed in a dazzling sequined gray suit jacket, took center stage to introduce “After the Hunt,” a gripping psychological thriller. The film delves deep into the complexities of a college professor, Alma (played by Julia Roberts), who faces a profound personal crisis. Her world unravels when her protégé, Maggie (Ayo Edebiri), accuses Alma’s close friend and colleague Hank (Andrew Garfield) of sexual assault.
A Star-Studded Evening
Julia Roberts shared her heartfelt connection to New York, remarking, “I moved to New York when I was 17 years old — and I’m 57. This is top 3 great achievements of my New York life. So thank you so much for having us.” Her words resonated deeply with the audience.
Following a warm embrace with Roberts, Guadagnino expressed his hope for the film’s impact, stating it was “made to make you talk about it and fight over it, and be laughing and being desperate and happy.” The premiere was graced by co-stars Garfield, Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, alongside screenwriter Nora Garrett. Among the luminaries in attendance was Julia’s niece, Emma Roberts.
Behind the Scenes Insights
Screenwriter Nora Garrett shared her excitement about Andrew Garfield’s performance. “One of the scenes I was really looking forward to was the one where Andrew Garfield’s character, Hank Gibson, confronts Julia’s character, Alma, in her classroom,” she revealed. “That was Andrew’s first day on set, and he just knocked it out of the park. I almost started crying.”
Garrett highlighted the film’s nuanced dialogue, saying, “I was an actor and so much of the acting training I got was about, ‘You have to be on your character’s side — even if they’re doing things that you don’t agree with. It’s not about judging your character. It’s about trying to find a place of commonality and work from there.’ And I think I did the same thing with the dialogue — I hope.”
Afterparty Celebrations
Post-screening, the attendees gathered at Tavern on the Green for an elegant afterparty, enjoying delightful treats like mini lobster rolls and assorted meat skewers. About an hour in, Guadagnino appeared, still sparkling in his distinctive attire, adding to the festive atmosphere.
“After the Hunt” is set to debut in select U.S. theaters on October 10, before expanding its release on October 17, offering audiences nationwide the chance to engage with its riveting narrative.
