San Diego Film Festival Unveils Must-See Films and Award Contenders

The San Diego International Film Festival is poised to captivate audiences once again, showcasing an impressive array of films that span across genres and borders. Set to begin on October 15, the festival promises a diverse lineup, featuring prominent titles like “Rental Family,” “Hamnet,” and “After the Hunt.” With an eclectic mix of award contenders, shorts, animations, and documentaries, this year’s event is sure to leave a mark on the awards season landscape.

Exciting Festival Launch and Diverse Lineup

Kicking off on October 15 with Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield, the San Diego Intl. Film Fest runs through October 19. This year, the festival includes films from 29 countries and celebrates 24 world premieres, chosen from an astounding 3,500 submissions.

The festival’s mid-October timing aligns perfectly with the rise of awards season, featuring a Gala and Narrative Competition. Highlights include Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet” with Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, and Hikari’s “Rental Family,” starring Brendan Fraser. These films join a lineup of compelling stories from filmmakers like Cole Webley, Marie-Elsa Sgualdo, and Max Walker-Silverman, among others.

Spotlight on International Cinema

The San Diego Intl. Film Fest emphasizes global storytelling through its Foreign Film track. In collaboration with the House of Pacific Relations in Balboa Park, the festival honors 35 vibrant cultures during its 90th celebration. On October 19, the Culinary Cinema event will delight gastronomes, with Shawn Styles of CBS8 hosting a gourmet buffet followed by Mads K. Baekkevold’s culinary-themed film, “The Chef & the Daruma.”

Award Ceremonies and Premieres

This year, Variety partners with the festival, presenting the Night of the Stars Tribute and the illustrious Gregory Peck Award for Excellence in Cinema. The festival offers more than film screenings; it’s described by CEO Tonya Mantooth as “a cultural experience” that blends international and local cinema, sparking global dialogue and community connection.

Rich Program of Docs, Shorts, and Animations

Besides the marquee films, the San Diego Film Festival will present a robust selection of documentaries, shorts, and animations. Notable entries in the Gala and Narrative Competition are “100 Liters of Gold” by Teemu Nikki, “Case 137” by Dominik Moll, and “Hello Mother” by Byambasuren Ganbat, along with many others.

Intriguing documentaries like “A Quiet Love” by Garry Keane, and “Ugo: An Artist at War” by Steve Nemsick broaden the festival’s scope. Meanwhile, the San Diego Scene sidebar features local talents with films including “Code Red” by Jessica McGaugh and “Coulrophobia” by Christopher White.
