In the vibrant world of filmmaking, it’s not often that a movie is described as the “most naughty, feral, f—ing crazy ensemble film” about teens in remission attending a summer camp. Yet, that’s exactly how 25-year-old British filmmaker George Jaques portrays his sophomore feature, “Sunny Dancer.” Chock-full of humor and heartfelt moments, the film, opening Berlinale’s Generation 14plus strand, challenges the typical cancer narrative with its unique and uplifting approach. This comedy has managed to bring together an impressive cast, including Neil Patrick Harris, Bella Ramsey, Este Haim, and James Blunt, marking it as a standout in the film industry.
George Jaques: A Unique Visionary
George Jaques is not your average filmmaker. At just 25, he has crafted a coming-of-age comedy, “Sunny Dancer,” that blends hilarity and emotional depth. The film tells the story of Ivy, a rebellious teen in remission from leukemia, navigating a so-called “Chemo Camp” filled with misfit friends. The narrative captures the juxtaposition of joyous adolescence against the ever-present specter of mortality, striking a balance between laughter and tears.
Inspired by his mother’s battle with cancer and stories from young survivors, Jaques aimed to create a film that wouldn’t patronize its audience. His goal was to step away from typical hospital scenes, portraying kids full of life and vigor. Drawing inspiration from iconic 1980s ensemble films, Jaques assembled a cast of rising stars, including Daniel Quinn-Toye and Jasmine Elcock, crafting a dynamic and energetic young ensemble.
Star-Studded Cast and Connections
Securing Bella Ramsey, especially after their success in “The Last of Us,” was no small feat for Jaques. A heartfelt letter and creative sizzle reel piqued Ramsey’s interest, leading to their involvement. Known for drawing people into his orbit, Jaques reached out boldly to seasoned actors like Neil Patrick Harris, who plays the camp’s quirky president. Harris quickly found himself charmed by Jaques, and they are already considering future projects together.
The film also features a cameo by musician James Blunt, a connection stemming from a casual encounter Jaques had in his youth. Years later, he reached out, and Blunt happily participated, adding a unique musical touch to the film without charge. Grammy-nominated Este Haim also joined, resonating with the story due to her personal experience with similar camps, adding musical depth alongside co-composer Zachary Dawes.
A Celebration of Youthful Joy
“Sunny Dancer,” despite its serious undertones, is infused with lively energy and cheeky humor. It pushes against the grim backdrop of cancer with joy and chaos, capturing the spirit of youth in rebellion and celebration. On set, spirits were high with outings like a Kylie Minogue concert, encapsulating the film’s ethos of vibrant living.
Jaques’s indomitable spirit and expanding network have helped this unconventional movie come to life, supported by Embankment Films from the project’s early days. “Sunny Dancer” provides an antidote to mainstream cinema, offering warmth and exuberance that cuts through the chill, both in Berlin and the broader film landscape.
The story of “Sunny Dancer” signifies that even the craziest ideas can translate into impactful cinema. As Jaques looks towards future projects, it’s clear that his approach will continue to defy expectations, bringing unique stories to the silver screen.
