Radiohead Thrills Fans with Surprise Performance of ‘Like Spinning Plates’ in London
In an unexpected delight for fans, Radiohead resurrected their haunting track "Like Spinning Plates" during their final show at the O2 Arena in London. This rare performance added a special touch to their reunion tour, marking the song’s first live rendition in seven years and highlighting the band’s dynamic adaptability and enduring appeal.
The atmosphere was electric as Radiohead concluded their four-night stint in London. The audience was captivated when the band performed “Like Spinning Plates,” a track from their album Amnesiac. This unexpected addition thrilled fans and underscored the uniqueness of their reunion tour.
The song “Like Spinning Plates” is famed for its innovative composition, developed from the reversed backing track of an early version of “I Will." Thom Yorke once shared the creative process: “We’d turned the tape around, and I was in another room, heard the vocal melody coming backwards, and thought, ‘That’s miles better than the right way round,’ then spent the rest of the night trying to learn the melody.”
Fans responded with enthusiasm to the surprise performance. One attendee took to social media, exclaiming, “wtf do you mean i just heard like spinning plates live??????”
Earlier in the tour, Radiohead treated audiences to other rare performances, including “Kid A” and “Talk Show Host” in Bologna, Italy. They also revisited “You and Whose Army” and “Pyramid Song” from Amnesiac during their European circuit.
The band’s return to the stage this year was highly anticipated. After a seven-year hiatus, Radiohead announced their reunion in September, launching a series of performances in Europe. The tour began with a quartet of concerts in Madrid, followed by shows in Bologna and London, with upcoming dates planned for Copenhagen and Berlin in December.
Reflecting on the reunion, drummer Philip Selway remarked, “Last year, we got together to rehearse, just for the hell of it. After a seven-year pause, it felt really good to play the songs again and reconnect with a musical identity that has become lodged deep inside all five of us. It also made us want to play some shows together, so we hope you can make it to one of the upcoming dates.”
Radiohead’s live performances continue to captivate audiences, offering a blend of nostalgia and innovation that resonates with fans old and new, ensuring their enduring legacy in the music world.
