Pedro Pascal, now starring as Reed Richards, a.k.a. Mister Fantastic, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is making waves with his take on the character. However, fans should hold off on speculating that he’s the new leader of the Avengers. Although rumors circulated following director Matt Shakman’s comments, Pascal downplays the notion that his character will assume such a role in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.” The anticipated crossover sparks interest, but Pascal assures audiences that this particular storyline might not unfold as many expect.
Behind the Rumors
The buzz around Reed Richards potentially leading the Avengers traces back to a viral interview with “Fantastic Four: First Steps” director Matt Shakman. Speaking to Variety, Shakman hinted at a dynamic journey for Reed, evolving from a reclusive scientist to a protective family man, and possibly leading Earth’s mightiest heroes. With Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach set to reprise their roles in “Avengers: Doomsday,” the speculation seemed plausible.
Shakman explained, “I realized that the version we were building had to have all of those elements.” Despite this, Pedro Pascal sets the record straight, acknowledging the excitement but clarifying his character’s path. According to Pascal, “It’s big news to me, that’s for one… there is something that happens in the comics… That is something that happens in the comics. It isn’t necessarily something that my character’s future entails.”
Pascal’s Perspective
In an interview with the Associated Press, Pascal emphasized that he isn’t withholding plot spoilers but rather addressing a misunderstanding. He shared, “I am being honest in that. I am not even trying to avoid spoilers. It’s a little bit of a mislead.” Despite the buzz, Pascal remains grounded, focusing on developing Reed Richards authentically and collaboratively with Shakman and the cast.
A Unique Casting Process
Pascal and Shakman share a history, having had the same talent manager early in their careers. Pascal described reuniting for “Fantastic Four” as a destined moment. Interestingly, none of the cast members underwent traditional auditions; instead, they were chosen after meetings with Shakman. This unorthodox approach extended to rehearsals, which were conducted like a theatrical production to foster chemistry.
“We approached the story dramaturgically as you would a play,” Pascal noted. This method allowed the cast to build strong interpersonal connections, which they believe translated effectively on screen. Now showing nationwide, “Fantastic Four” continues to expand the Marvel Universe with its fresh take on beloved characters.
