An intriguing exploration into a real-life drama, “Shamed” is set to grace screens with backing from Matchbox Shots, renowned for producing the critically acclaimed “Andhadhun.” This compelling adaptation of Sarbjit Kaur Athwal’s memoir unravels the harrowing true story of honor killing, with the film drawing significant attention at the WAVES Film Bazaar. The powerful narrative promises to shine a light on domestic violence within the South Asian community, making it an essential conversation starter.
Producer’s Vision for “Shamed”
Matchbox Shots, the notable Mumbai production house known for its impactful narratives like “Andhadhun,” is championing the adaptation of the memoir “Shamed.” The story revolves around a British-Punjabi woman who daringly testified against her family after witnessing them plot her sister-in-law’s murder. This courageous act resulted in the U.K.’s first bodiless murder conviction, an unprecedented legal milestone.
Sarita Patil, a producer at Matchbox Shots, underscores the story’s dual nature as a powerful narrative of both betrayal and bravery. “What drew me to this story was the way it exposes the insidious violence that can live beneath the surface of ‘happy families.’ But it also offers an extraordinary template of resistance. It’s not only a story of betrayal, but of courage, of a woman who rises against impossible odds,” she states, framing “Shamed” as a catalyst for essential discussions on domestic violence.
Creative Direction and Production
At the helm of the “Shamed” adaptation is director-writer Dikssha Routray. Known for her work as a creative producer on films like “Andhadhun” and the upcoming “Merry Christmas,” Routray is prepared to bring this story to life. Her experience directing short films such as “The Ideal Bride” and “Red Velvet” brings a nuanced touch to the project.
Matchbox Shots is actively pursuing international co-producers through the WAVES Film Bazaar, with 25% of the budget already secured. Producer Sarita Patil explains, “For ‘Shamed,’ we are strategically leveraging co-production markets, private equity, and domestic and international rebates to build a strong financial structure going forward.”
Future Prospects and Support for Emerging Talent
The presentation at WAVES Film Bazaar marks the first official introduction of “Shamed,” which is nearing the final stages of script development. Production is anticipated to commence by 2027. Matchbox Shots not only focuses on established narratives but is also committed to supporting emerging talent. As Patil elaborates, “At Matchbox, we provide a platform for new voices to break through, offering them the opportunity to shine and contribute to the future of storytelling.”
Hosted as a component of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, WAVES Film Bazaar plays a crucial role in bringing diverse, impactful stories like “Shamed” to a global audience, fostering dialogue and inspiring change.
