Ilya Khrzhanovskiy Honored at Sarajevo Film Festival's 31st Edition

The renowned director-artist Ilya Khrzhanovskiy, celebrated for his groundbreaking “DAU” project, is set to be honored at the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival. This prestigious event will spotlight Khrzhanovskiy’s extensive body of work through a special “Tribute To” program, offering audiences a curated retrospective of his films.

From Russia to Global Recognition

Born in Russia, Ilya Khrzhanovskiy graduated from the Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). However, his relationship with Russia changed dramatically after the Ministry of Justice labeled him a foreign agent last year, prompting him to renounce his Russian citizenship.

Khrzhanovskiy’s debut feature film, “4,” garnered international acclaim by winning the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2005. It also received best director accolades in Buenos Aires and Athens, screening at over 50 festivals and enjoying worldwide distribution.

The Ambitious “DAU” Project

Since 2006, Khrzhanovskiy has dedicated himself to the “DAU” project, an innovative blend of film, art, and anthropology. This ambitious endeavor began with its selection for the Atelier of the Festival de Cannes. The project resulted in 700 hours of footage, 14 feature films, three TV series, video performances, and scientific films. Its Paris premiere in 2019 was marked by an immersive experience at the Centre Pompidou, with the recreated “DAU” institute drawing several notable artists and actors, including Willem Dafoe and Marina Abramović.

The films “DAU. Natasha” and “DAU. Degeneration” were featured at the Berlin Film Festival in 2020, with “DAU. Natasha” winning the Silver Bear for outstanding artistic contribution to cinematography. Both films received praise from international critics and collected various awards globally.

Beyond Filmmaking

Since 2020, Ilya Khrzhanovskiy has served as the artistic director of the Babi Yar Holocaust Memorial Center in Kyiv, Ukraine, the largest of its kind in Eastern Europe. His contributions include co-producing award-winning documentaries like “Babi Yar. Context” (2021) and “The Kiev Trial” (2022) by Sergei Loznitsa, and installing notable memorial pieces, such as “Mirror Field” and the wooden synagogue “Place for Reflection.”

Khrzhanovskiy was honored with the Master Award for outstanding achievement in film art at the Yerevan Film Festival in 2022, acknowledging his substantial impact on contemporary art and cinema.

New Horizons and Collaborations

This year, Khrzhanovskiy co-founded IP Filmworks with Philippe Bober in France, marking a new chapter in his career. His ongoing exploration in media and art projects continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art and filmmaking.

The 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, scheduled from August 15 to 22, promises to be a significant occasion, celebrating Khrzhanovskiy’s profound influence on the cinematic world.
