Films Boutique Secures Rights to Rasoulof’s 'Sense of Water'

Renowned Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof is once again in the cinematic spotlight with his latest creation, “Sense of Water.” This film marks a significant step in Rasoulof’s illustrious career, being the first work he has completed outside of Iran. Acquired for global distribution by Films Boutique, this piece is set to captivate audiences worldwide with its poignant narrative and evocative themes. Rasoulof’s move to Germany in May 2024 after facing severe penalties in Iran has shaped his storytelling approach, infusing “Sense of Water” with personal and political undertones.

International Premiere and Unique Setting

The 39-minute short film “Sense of Water” is set to debut at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film’s plot unfolds in a glass cabin situated in the northernmost reaches of the world, where an Iranian writer in exile seeks refuge with his former lover, Nazanin. This unique location underscores the isolation and introspection inherent in the narrative.

The synopsis suggests an impending farewell, as the protagonist Ali, despite facing a lengthy prison sentence, intends to return to Iran. He is determined to continue the struggle he once left behind, adding layers of complexity to the story. “Sense of Water” not only explores exile but also delves into the emotional and linguistic disconnect experienced when away from one’s homeland.

Reflections on Exile and Expression

Rasoulof’s experiences in exile heavily influence the film’s storyline. He explains, “My lived experience in exile was the starting point for this story.” He describes a profound disconnection from language and emotions, a sentiment that resonates throughout “Sense of Water.” This emotional detachment forms the crux of the film’s exploration of exile beyond physical separation, highlighting the struggle of reconnecting feelings with language in a foreign environment.

This thematic depth highlights Rasoulof’s talent for weaving personal and political narratives, allowing audiences to engage with his journey on multiple levels.

Films Boutique and Continued Collaborations

Films Boutique’s CEO, Jean-Christophe Simon, expressed enthusiasm about distributing “Sense of Water,” stating, “We’re incredibly proud to continue our collaboration with Mohammad Rasoulof and our friends at Run Way Pictures.” This statement reflects the ongoing partnership and mutual respect developed since the success of Rasoulof’s previous film, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig.”

The film’s production was supported by notable names like Amin Sadraei, Rozita Hendijanian, and Mani Tilgner through Hamburg’s Run Way Pictures. Backed by the Displacement Film Fund, initiated by Cate Blanchett, along with the Hubert Bals Fund and the Moin Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, “Sense of Water” benefits from an impressive collaborative effort extending far beyond its narrative.

Given the recent tragic events in Rasoulof’s homeland, “Sense of Water” emerges as a particularly timely work, reflecting ongoing struggles and offering a poignant commentary on resilience and identity in the face of adversity.
