Director Oliver Laxe Envisions Next Film Set in the Amazon

Esteemed filmmaker Oliver Laxe, renowned for his work on “Sirat,” is turning his creative vision towards a lush new setting—the Amazon rainforest. With a deep desire to immerse himself in the rich natural and cultural tapestry of the region, Laxe is eager to bring its essence to life on the big screen. The acclaimed director, who thrives on authentic experiences, is preparing to embark on a journey that promises to envelop him in the mystique of the Amazon.

Inspired by the Amazon

“I’m very drawn to the Amazon,” Laxe shares with Variety, expressing his fascination with the forest’s ceremonies, rituals, and medicine. His intention to capture these elements in film is unwavering. “I need to experience it,” he emphasizes. For Laxe, the Amazon must be felt firsthand, as he believes that reality can only be authentically translated into film through personal experience.

A Moment of Transition

Currently, Laxe’s Amazonian aspirations are on hold as he navigates an awards campaign that has brought him to the Marrakech Film Festival. His stay in Marrakech is particularly meaningful, as the city holds personal significance—Laxe spent over a decade in Morocco, launching his career in Tangier. His Cannes-winning film “Sirat,” Spain’s submission for the international feature Oscar, was inspired by the Atlas Mountains and the oasis of Erfoud.

“I’m very drawn to that landscape as well,” Laxe notes, admiring its ancient, grounding presence. He acknowledges the power such environments have in making one feel both insignificant and profoundly connected to the earth.

The Journey of “Sirat”

Rooted firmly in the present, Laxe remains committed to his promotional and awards endeavors for “Sirat.” The journey has been taxing. “The level of intense connection with the audience gives me peace,” he shares. However, the relentless travel has taken its toll. “I’m tired. And yes, I have no time for meditation,” he admits, recounting shared experiences with fellow filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. Together, they acknowledge the exhaustion that comes from their demanding schedules.

Looking Forward

Despite the challenges, Laxe remains hopeful about joining his friend at the Oscar ceremony in March. With an optimistic smile, he expresses his wish, “Inshallah.” The Amazon awaits as his next muse, and his excitement to dive into its depths is palpable. For Oliver Laxe, the rainforest isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a source of inspiration that promises a new cinematic adventure.
