Chile’s Quijote Films Joins Award-Winning Brazilian Doc ‘Mariana x BHP’

Chile’s Quijote Films has taken a significant step by joining the production of “Mariana x BHP,” a Brazilian documentary directed by Renan Flumian. This collaboration highlights Quijote Films’ commitment to impactful storytelling, exemplified by their previous projects such as “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo.” The documentary, which investigates a historic environmental lawsuit, is set to capture global attention with its gripping narrative.

Exploring Environmental Justice

Developed over six years, “Mariana x BHP” delves into the catastrophic collapse of the Mariana dam in Brazil. This event led to one of the largest environmental lawsuits in history. The documentary’s journey through 17 cities across three continents resulted in over 200 hours of footage, offering an in-depth look at the tragedy and its aftermath. It gained recognition at the Lau Haizetara Forum in San Sebastián, winning a cash prize, and was recently showcased to potential buyers and platforms at the 5th Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid.

Quijote Films’ Vision and Collaborations

Quijote Films’ producer Giancarlo Nasi emphasized the value of working with Brazilian partners, reflecting on his long-standing connection with Brazil’s film industry. “Collaborating with Brazil has been an incredible experience,” he said, highlighting the strength and resilience of Brazilian cinema. The partnership has further solidified Quijote’s international co-production strategy, with plans for future projects spanning Canada, Argentina, Mexico, and the U.S.

A Legal Thriller with Global Impact

Sergio Karmy of Quijote Films expressed the film’s potential to engage audiences worldwide with its compelling narrative styled as a legal thriller. “We’re shaping it with the tone of a legal thriller: compelling, critical of the system, conversation-starting, but also deeply engaging,” Karmy stated. The film aims to resonate socially and politically, while appealing to a broad audience.

Renan Flumian’s Cinematic Influence

Director Renan Flumian brings his unique perspective to the project, having closely followed the lawsuit in London for six years. “This documentary follows their fight for justice and the broader potential of the case,” Flumian remarked, underscoring its significance in holding multinational corporations accountable. His previous works, such as “The Hardest Conversation to Have With Your Parents” and “Acende a Luz,” showcase his ability to tackle profound topics with sensitivity and depth.

With “Mariana x BHP,” Quijote Films once again demonstrates its commitment to global storytelling, providing a platform for issues that resonate on an international scale.
