Bulgarian Branch of Female Film Club Debuts at CineLibri Festival

During the vibrant CineLibri Film Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Female Film Club is set to inaugurate its Bulgarian branch, FFC Bulgaria. This strategic move not only amplifies the reach of this global network for women and non-binary filmmakers but also strengthens its commitment to fostering diversity and creativity within the industry. As part of this exciting launch, a gala event will welcome prospective members and offer them unique opportunities for growth and collaboration in the realm of filmmaking.

Empowering Bulgarian Filmmakers

The advent of FFC Bulgaria provides a significant platform for local filmmakers, enabling them to connect with the international Female Film Club community. With access to valuable learning resources and interviews with established filmmakers, members can enhance their craft and network extensively. Spearheaded by Krassimira Belev of First Draft and Martin I. Petrov from the International Film Festival Glasgow, the initiative also enjoys support from Nu Boyana Studios. As an exciting perk, one of the first 200 members will receive €50,000 worth of studio use and equipment to aid in their filmmaking journey.

A Collaborative Beginning

The idea for FFC Bulgaria took root after a fateful meeting at Cannes between FFC co-founder Liza van der Smissen and key figures Belev and Petrov. Krassimira expressed her enthusiasm: “Meeting Liza in Cannes felt like it was meant to be. I truly admire the work FFC has done internationally, and as a woman filmmaker who has faced many of the same challenges, I feel deeply passionate about helping others. My hope is that this organization will give women in Bulgaria the knowledge and support they need to be brave and proactive with their stories.”

Petrov emphasized the importance of nurturing new talent: “It is of great essence to support independent filmmakers at the start of their career and give them proper guidance to enter the industry with confidence. We have a duty as festivals, film funds and established production companies to educate, discover new talent and give them a stage to thrive.”

A Thriving Industry

As the Bulgarian film industry continues to flourish, collaborations with initiatives like the Female Film Club have become increasingly vital. The recent partnership between FFC and Lerner to finance “The Red Box” at Nu Boyana Studios highlights the potential for growth and innovation. Lerner stated: “The Bulgarian film industry is thriving and it is exciting to continue to work together with the FFC, supporting Bulgarian filmmakers and showing the world the possibilities of filming here.”

Official Launch at CineLibri

The official launch of FFC Bulgaria is slated for October 23 during the 11th edition of the CineLibri Intl. Film Festival in Sofia. To celebrate, the first 100 members can join the club for free, paving the way for a new generation of Bulgarian filmmakers to make their mark on the global stage.
