Black Mandala Secures Gripping ‘Lily’s Ritual’ for Grimmfest Debut

New Zealand’s Black Mandala has secured international sales rights for the Spanish horror film Lily’s Ritual, directed by Manu Herrera. This acquisition comes just before the movie’s world premiere at the renowned Grimmfest in Manchester, U.K. The film, steeped in atmospheric horror and practical effects, is poised to captivate audiences worldwide, marking a significant step for Spanish horror cinema.

Return to Traditional Horror Techniques

Lily’s Ritual distinguishes itself through a commitment to practical effects, reminiscent of classic horror films. With around 90% of the movie relying on prosthetic makeup and traditional FX techniques, the film forges a tactile and immersive experience. Renowned prosthetic makeup artist Pedro de Diego meticulously crafted each effect during the script’s development, ensuring a seamless integration that enhances the film’s visual impact.

A Chilling Tale Unfolds

The narrative unfolds during the fall equinox of 1999, following four friends at an isolated cabin as they conduct a witchcraft initiation. Lily, portrayed by Maggie García in her debut lead role, symbolizes the element of air. The story takes a grim twist when she learns she’s intended as a sacrificial offering to the demon Lilith. The plot promises to weave suspense and horror, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.

Diverse and Talented Cast

The film features a captivating ensemble, including Patricia Peñalver as Lola, the head of the coven, and British actress Eve Ryan as Laura. Elena Gallardo plays Leo, while YouTuber Mike Fajardo, who brings a massive social media presence, appears as Adam, the film’s sole male character. This blend of experienced talent and fresh faces adds depth and intrigue to Lily’s Ritual.

Creative and Technical Collaboration

Helmed by Herrera and co-writer Javier Fernández Moratalla, the film boasts a skilled technical team. Felipe Alba serves as cinematographer, with Fernando Pocostales, a 2023 Ondas Award winner, designing the sound. The score by Joan Martorell and production design by Marina Viancini further elevate the cinematic experience. Executive producer Jorge Redondo, along with associates Nicolás Onetti and Michael Kraetzer, ensure the project’s high production value.

Expanding the Horror Experience

Beyond the screen, Lily’s Ritual embraces a transmedia strategy to engage audiences further. A comic book by artist Paco de la Fuente coincides with the film’s release, while a horror-themed podcast delving into the character of Lilith expands the universe, under the creative direction of Fernando Pocostales. These initiatives aim to enrich the viewer’s experience and extend the film’s influence.

Scheduled for Oct. 9-12, the 17th edition of Grimmfest will provide the ideal platform for Lily’s Ritual to showcase its unique blend of narrative depth and traditional horror artistry. As anticipation builds, the film is expected to generate significant interest and acclaim among horror enthusiasts.
