The Grand Unveiling at JAFF Market
Angga Dwimas Sasongko captivated audiences at the JAFF Market with a dynamic presentation of “Queen of Malacca.” This marks the first public introduction of the film’s ensemble cast, featuring notable talents such as Claresta Taufan, Faris Fadjar, and Wulan Guritno. The event also highlighted the involvement of producer Kori Adyanning and celebrated Hong Kong stunt coordinator Chan Man-ching, whose presence was met with enthusiastic applause.
A Modern Fantasy World
Sasongko described “Queen of Malacca” as a contemporary narrative steeped in the cultural and philosophical heritage of Southeast Asia. “This is not a period film. It’s modern, it’s contemporary. We built a fantasy world inspired by Southeast Asia — its belief systems, philosophy, even its writing and heirlooms,” he explained. By creating a unique mythology and cultural logic, the film promises to transport viewers into a vividly imagined realm.
Pioneering Action Sequences
The film’s action sequences are set to break new ground by merging Indonesian silat with the dynamic choreography of Hong Kong cinema. Sasongko has brought together the talents of rising Indonesian choreographer Reza Hilman and Chan Man-ching to craft a fresh hybrid action style. Chan, renowned for his work with Jackie Chan, expressed his vision: “I want to create a new style. I want to combine different people and different characters. Something new for this film.”
