AI Revives Hillel Slovak in Netflix's Red Hot Chili Peppers Documentary

Netflix‘s latest offering, The Rise Of The Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel, delves into the band’s formative years and highlights the impact of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak. A groundbreaking feature is the use of AI to recreate Slovak’s voice, allowing him to narrate his own journal entries. This innovative approach not only pays tribute to Slovak’s legacy but also enriches the storytelling experience in this captivating documentary.

Director Ben Feldman utilized artificial intelligence to lend Hillel Slovak an authentic voice, bringing the guitarist’s personal reflections to life in the film. The documentary, which explores the early journey of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Slovak’s pivotal role, opens with a disclaimer about the digitally reconstructed audio.

Feldman shared that Slovak’s family approved the use of AI, agreeing it was essential to convey his thoughts authentically. Feldman explained, “Having Hillel’s voice reading his own journals was a critical way to make his words feel alive.”

The Band’s Beginnings

Combining interviews with current band members, the film pieces together the history of their close-knit friendship. Anthony Kiedis and Flea, two founding members, recount their early bonding days with Slovak during high school in Los Angeles. Through a mix of personal anecdotes and journal excerpts, viewers gain an intimate look into their shared adventures on the punk and rock circuits.

Slovak’s contributions were crucial during the band’s nascent years, marked by his involvement in their first three albums. His untimely death at age 26 from a heroin overdose left a profound void, yet his influence remains evident in the band’s evolution.

Not an Official Band Project

It’s important to note that this documentary is not an official Red Hot Chili Peppers project. The band clarified that while they participated out of love for Slovak, they did not have a creative role. In a statement, they expressed hope that the film “sparks interest in Hillel and his work,” emphasizing the central focus on Slovak’s contributions and legacy.

The documentary premiered at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and began streaming on Netflix on March 20. This innovative film stands out by using AI technology not only to remember a musical talent but to bring his spirit back into the limelight.
