Anticipation is building for the international premiere of “Post Truth,” an innovative AI-generated documentary that is set to launch at the prestigious Warsaw Film Festival. Directed by the talented generative AI artist Alkan Avcıoğlu, this documentary explores the intriguing interplay between humanity and technology. Having already sparked interest in Turkey, the film’s broader release is highly anticipated by audiences eager to delve into its thought-provoking themes.
The AI-driven Vision of “Post Truth”
“Post Truth” is a groundbreaking documentary, as it harnesses the full power of artificial intelligence to create its visuals, soundtrack, and narration. Alkan Avcıoğlu, who directed the film, collaborated with multidisciplinary artist Vikki Bardot to co-write the documentary. This innovative work examines the modern relationship between humanity and technology, offering a critical perspective on how the digital age has transformed our perception of truth.
Avcıoğlu’s inspiration comes from the grand cinematic styles of acclaimed directors like Godfrey Reggio, known for “Koyaanisqatsi,” as well as Andrej Tarkovskij and Jean-Luc Godard. The documentary utilizes a self-reflexive tone to question the post-truth era, where facts often seem secondary to opinion.
Reception and Festival Debut
Premiered in Turkey earlier this year by arthouse distributor Başka Sinema, “Post Truth” was well-received by local critics. Its innovative approach to storytelling through AI impressed audiences across 20 Turkish cities. Now, its international debut at the Warsaw Film Festival marks an exciting new chapter in the film’s journey from a regional success to a global phenomenon.
Bartek Pulcyn, programming director for the festival, highlights the film’s significance: “Artificial intelligence is entering the world of cinema more and more boldly — often supporting human work in hidden ways, sometimes even replacing it.” Pulcyn praised “Post Truth” for its openness in using AI to explore significant questions about contemporary society.
Alkan Avcıoğlu: From Critic to Innovator
Before becoming an acclaimed AI visual artist, Alkan Avcıoğlu worked as a film critic and in film acquisitions. His shift to AI storytelling reflects his desire to push the boundaries of cinema. Avcıoğlu’s art is now recognized internationally, with exhibitions at major venues like Paris Photo and Art Basel Miami. He also recently collaborated with renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky on an exhibition in New York.
This groundbreaking documentary isn’t just a showcase of AI capabilities; it’s an in-depth conceptual exploration of documentary filmmaking’s potential. As Avcıoğlu himself states, “‘Post Truth’ is not a cheap trick showcasing AI or a gimmick, but a conceptual, in-depth exploration of the boundaries of what a documentary can be.”
