Sony’s quarterly earnings have soared, thanks in large part to the spectacular success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which not only boosted the company’s bottom line but also solidified its position in the entertainment industry.
Impressive Financial Results
For the quarter ending September 30, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) reported a remarkable 37% increase in sales, totaling $3.23 billion. Operating income skyrocketed to $581 million, marking a staggering year-over-year increase of 527%. This financial surge was largely attributed to the blockbuster performance of “Brand New Day.”
Theatrical Revenue Dominates
SPE’s theatrical revenue reached an astonishing $1.28 billion during this period, an 11-fold increase compared to the previous year. The success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was complemented by strong performances from horror franchises such as “Insidious: Out of the Further” and “Resident Evil.” However, revenue from the television productions segment fell 31% year-over-year, down to $483 million.
Box Office Triumph of ‘Brand New Day’
For the overall quarter, which marks the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, Sony reported a total revenue of 3.429 trillion yen ($21.5 billion), reflecting a 10% increase. Net income also saw a significant rise, reaching 450 billion yen ($2.8 billion), up 44% from the previous year.
Strength in Gaming Division
Sony’s gaming division performed strongly, with revenue rising 9% to 1.208 trillion yen ($7.6 billion), bolstered by increased sales of network services and both first- and third-party game titles. However, there was a decrease in PlayStation hardware sales, with 2.6 million PS5 units sold in the quarter, down from 4.0 million the previous year. The number of monthly active PlayStation users increased by 2 million sequentially to 127 million.
Operating Income Growth
The Game & Network Services segment saw an impressive 83% increase in operating income, reaching 220 billion yen ($1.4 billion). This growth is notably attributed to the absence of impairment losses recorded in the previous year against the intangible assets of game studio Bungie.
Music Segment Performance
In the music segment, sales for the September 2026 quarter rose 10% to 598.4 billion yen, driven by higher revenue from live events, merchandising, and streaming services. Operating income also increased by 6% to 122.8 billion yen.
The currency conversion rate used in Sony’s earnings report was $1 U.S. to 159.3 yen.
