Selena Gomez is facing serious legal challenges as investors have accused her, alongside her mother Mandy Teefey and former business partner Daniella Pierson, of defrauding them in relation to Wondermind, the mental health startup they co-founded. The investors claim they put nearly $1.2 million into Wondermind Global Inc. based on misleading insights about the company’s infrastructure, leadership, and operations.
Investors File Lawsuit
The lawsuit, which has been brought against Gomez, Teefey, Pierson, and Wondermind, cites a range of allegations including securities fraud, common law fraud, and breach of contract. The plaintiffs—Wondermind SRS 44, LLC and Bespoke Wondermind SPV 1, LLC—assert that they were led to believe that various revenue-generating streams, including a “groundbreaking” app and advertising deals, were actively in development. Instead, the suit alleges that the company quietly deteriorated over three years without any communication from its founders to the investors funding its collapse.
Gomez Strenuously Denies Allegations
In a statement issued through her attorney, Mathew S. Rosengart, Gomez vehemently denied the accusations. “The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported ‘fraud’ or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally,” Rosengart asserted. He added that they plan to “vigorously defend these false allegations” and are preparing to file a motion to dismiss what he termed “baseless claims.” This statement was first reported by People.
Revelations and Mismanagement Claims
The investors claim they did not uncover the troubling facts of the company’s operations until a report by The Cut surfaced last year. This article highlighted tensions between Gomez and Teefey, as well as a power struggle involving Pierson. According to the complaint, the report revealed significant mismanagement within Wondermind, including Teefy’s alleged substance abuse issues, Gomez’s failure to fulfill her responsibilities, and the startup’s inability to meet fundamental obligations such as timely payments to employees and vendors.
Pleas from Teefey and Pierson
Among the defendants, Pierson is specifically named in a count of alleged securities fraud for reportedly providing misleading information to investors. Further allegations include misappropriation of funds for personal use and misrepresentation of her newsletter, The Newsette, during business pitches. “Daniella categorically denies the allegations against her and welcomes the opportunity to present concrete documentation and financial records that establish the facts,” a representative for Pierson stated, adding that she has never used investor funds for personal expenses.
Awaiting Further Comments
As the legal dispute unfolds, Teefey has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the lawsuit. The outcome remains uncertain, but the allegations bring to light troubling aspects of Wondermind’s operations and leadership dynamics.
