Thessaloniki Features ‘Bearcave,’ ‘Pillion,’ ‘Milk Teeth’ in Lineup

The Thessaloniki Film Festival, scheduled from October 30 to November 9, is set to captivate audiences with its intriguing lineup, featuring films like “Bearcave,” “Pillion,” and “Milk Teeth.” This year’s International Competition celebrates 12 films from emerging directors, affirming Thessaloniki as a significant platform for innovative cinema.

International Competition Overview

The jury at this year’s festival comprises a distinguished panel: Elegance Bratton, a multifaceted director and actor, Thania Dimitrakopoulou, sales head at the Match Factory, and renowned cinematographer Fred Elmes. The Golden Alexander for best feature film includes a 10,000 euro prize, while the Silver Alexander for best direction offers 5,000 euros. Additional accolades will be awarded for best actor, actress, and screenplay or artistic achievement.

Highlighted Films at Thessaloniki

“A Light That Never Goes Out” by Lauri-Matti Parppei, representing Finland and Norway, tells the story of Pauli, a flutist grappling with personal crises. Joining a group of young, unconventional musicians in his hometown, he finds unexpected solace through experimental music.

From Greece and the U.K., “Bearcave” by Krysianna B. Papadakis and Stergios Dinopoulos explores friendship and daring choices in a Greek village, as Argyro challenges her pregnant friend Anneta to explore the mysterious Bearcave.

“Milk Teeth” by Mihai Mincan presents a haunting narrative set in Romania during the final days of Ceaușescu’s regime. It follows 10-year-old Maria as she confronts her sister’s disappearance, enveloped in a reality she struggles to comprehend.

Unique Narratives and Challenges

“Pillion,” directed by Harry Lighton, is an adaptation of Adam Mars-Jones’s novella “Box Hill.” This UK film offers a poignant, queer coming-of-age story featuring Colin, whose mundane life is transformed by a relationship with a mysterious biker.

Evi Kalogiropoulou’s “Gorgonà,” a Greece-France collaboration, depicts a futuristic world where two women battle a patriarchal society. It’s a tale of resilience and transformation amid environmental chaos.

“On the Sea,” from Helen Walsh in the U.K., reveals the internal and communal conflicts of Jack, a mussel farmer, confronting hidden desires that ultimately alter his familial relationships.

Emotional Depth Across Films

“Beachcomber” by Aristotelis Maragkos highlights dream versus reality as Elias attempts to honor his sailor father’s legacy through art. In “Cotton Queen,” Suzannah Mirghani narrates Nafisa’s life upheavals in Sudan with deep cultural roots defying colonial constraints.

With its diverse entries, the 2023 Thessaloniki Film Festival not only embraces new cinematic voices but also promises dynamic storytelling that challenges societal norms and personal introspection. Both “Bearcave,” “Pillion,” and “Milk Teeth” exemplify this, setting a high standard for future film narratives.
