Laurence Fishburne Questions Morpheus Return in Potential 'Matrix 5'

As discussions around a potential “Matrix 5” continue to garner attention, the question of Laurence Fishburne’s return as Morpheus remains a focal point for fans and journalists alike. With Drew Goddard reportedly steering the next chapter of this iconic sci-fi series, Fishburne has voiced his uncertainties, pondering whether a comeback would even make sense.

Considering a Possible Return

At a “Matrix” reunion event during New York Comic Con 2025, Fishburne addressed the possibility of reprising his role. “It depends on how good it is, really,” he remarked. “If it’s great, then yeah, if it makes sense. I don’t know if it makes sense.” The actor’s comments leave the door slightly ajar, contingent upon the new film’s direction and quality.

Past Attempts to Return

Fishburne shared that he reached out to the Wachowski sisters regarding his interest in participating in “The Matrix Resurrections.” However, matters did not unfold as he had hoped. “I reached out,” Fishburne revealed. “It just didn’t pan out. I said ‘Thank you very much,’ And Lana [Wachowski] said, ‘Thank you very much, I’ll think about it,’ and that was that.”

The Legacy and Impact of “The Matrix”

During a panel discussion alongside Joe Pantoliano, Fishburne reflected on the enduring influence of “The Matrix.” When asked about its impact on modern filmmakers, he emphasized the film’s groundbreaking contributions across various storytelling genres. “There’s no movie that comes after ‘The Matrix’ that’s a sci-fi action or fantasy movie that’s not been influenced by it,” Fishburne stated. “It’s everywhere. It’s so pervasive you almost forget where it came from at this point. Now, people don’t realize, but no ‘The Matrix,’ no MCU. It [just] doesn’t look the same.”

This introspection serves as a reminder of the legacy that both the franchise and Fishburne’s portrayal of Morpheus have left in the cinematic world. As “Matrix 5” rumors swirl, whether or not Fishburne reprises his iconic role, his influence on the series and the genre remains undisputed.
