Jamie Lee Curtis is candidly sharing her experience on the hit comedy series New Girl, where she played the mother of Zooey Deschanel’s character in six episodes from 2012 to 2018. While Curtis appreciates the show, her thoughts on the filming process reveal a different sentiment altogether.
Disdain for Single-Camera Shows
At NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience on August 10, Curtis didn’t hold back when discussing her time on New Girl. “I did a single-camera [show], which I hated,” she said in a clip shared by Entertainment Weekly. “It’s a good show, but doing it is just like doing a movie. You’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent and it’s awful. For me, awful.”
Not a Reflection of the Cast
It’s essential to note that Curtis’s dissatisfaction wasn’t due to the quality of the comedy or the talented ensemble cast that included Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, Jake Johnson, and Hannah Simone. Instead, her frustration was tied to the structure of single-camera comedies, which lack a live studio audience. “Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun,” she emphasized.
A Fondness for Multi-Camera Sitcoms
In contrast, Curtis has cherished memories from her time on the multi-camera sitcom Anything But Love, which she recently referred to as her “favorite job ever.” This shows that her preference leans towards the atmosphere that multi-camera formats provide, where the laughter of a live audience contributes to the overall experience.
